A capital Sundae Session

For over two years nzherald.co.nz's Sundae Session series has been documenting the best in upcoming local musical talent with sessions recorded at York Street Studios - but this time Wellington was the venue. To celebrate Barkers' new sponsorship of the sessions hosted by Hugh Sundae, their flagship Lambton Quay store was transformed into a studio one night in December. Here's a run-down on the latest act ...

Who: Sheep, Dog & Wolf

From: Auckland, moved to Wellington for studies but staying a while longer.

Line-up: Sheep, Dog & Wolf is Daniel McBride, writing and recording all of the music himself. For live performances he brings in drummer Eddie Crawshaw, while Daniel concentrates on vocals, guitar, bass, saxophone, clarinet, and cello.

Where they're at: Released the five-track Ablutophobia EP in 2011 and debut album Egospect in August last year. Has toured European music festivals and last year won the Critics' Choice Prize at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. Currently working on second album and expanding band.

What they sound like: Like some kind of pocket orchestra. Daniel's classical and jazz training is all through his contemporary take on melodic, dark pop music.

What they're playing in the Sundae Sessions: Five songs taken from Egospect, with a few stretched-out live jam versions.

Hugh's highlights: "It was really just watching them win over more and more of the audience over the five-song set. I had the same feeling watching them at the Critics' Choice Prize and knew then I wanted to get them in for a session. The loop pedal set-up will be replaced with more band members at some point so it's worth seeing Daniel juggle instruments live while you still can."
