FIVE new track and field records were set when Kaponga Athletic Club hosted the 48th NOROK Cup Challenge last Sunday.
South Taranaki Athletic Clubs; Normanby, Opunake, Kaponga, Eltham and Hawera had 168 athletes competing in 142 track events, long jump and high jump.
Ashleigh Bennett, of Hawera, set records for the 11yr girls in the 75m and 100m, says Kaponga Athletics Club president Deborah Collins.
Zoe Hobbs from Eltham set records for the 13yr girls 100m and long jump, and Michael Brimelow from Opunake set a new record for 11yr boys for the 100m.
Overall results were Hawera 1, Normanby 2, Opunake 3, Eltham 4 and Kaponga 5.
The day was warm and this did not stop the athletes aged from 5 through to 15 giving it their all, and the support from their clubs and families was fantastic.
Each club had volunteers who helped on the day at the track and field events. "The assistance provided by these people is immense. They are happy to share their knowledge and this helps athletic clubs continue to provide a great base for children to enjoy the sport," says Deborah.
