Inland Revenue has backed off from intercepting 50,000 of the $570 Vector dividend cheques due to go out to 262,000 households and businesses in Auckland and Manukau cities and most of Papakura.
The department announced this morning that it would not seek customer information from the Vector power lines company of 50,000 people who owe tax money.
Operations manager Liz Sinclair said that instead Inland Revenue would encourage people who owe tax to settle their debts from the payout.
The Auckland Energy Consumer Trust will meet at 5.30 pm today to decide whether to distribute $151 million of dividends evenly to businesses and households by the end of March. The trust will also decide who will qualify for the payment.
Full details will be published in tomorrow's Weekend Herald.
The money is dividends from 1998, 1999 and 2000 which were frozen during court action by the Auckland, Manukau and Papakura councils. A High Court ruling before Christmas cleared the payout.
