Police arrested 14 people after the first riot of the holiday season at Mt Maunganui early this morning.
Fighting broke out in the Marine Parade and Commons Avenue area of Mt Maunganui with bottles being thrown at police.
A police spokesman said 14 people were arrested - all except one of whom were teenagers from various parts of the North Island - for a range of alleged offences during the crowd trouble.
He said police were called in and donned protective gear to move a crowd of about 400 people who had congregated near the Marine Parade and Commons Avenue intersection.
Some of those charged are from Auckland, Wellington, Whakatane and Hamilton.
An 18-year-old youth from Papamoa was charged with assaulting a police officer, while two 18-year-olds from Katikati were arrested for fighting in a public place.
The others arrested will be facing charges such as disorderly behaviour, breaching the peace, breaching the liquor ban offensive language.
A 27-year-old man from Papakura was also arrested for allegedly using offensive behaviour and possession of cannabis.
The police spokesman said most of the people arrested had been drinking alcohol.
Local residents and holiday makers are angry with the noisy revellers ruining their New Year holiday.
``It was a shocker, the kids are out of control,'' said one resident, who did not wish to be named in case of retribution.
The woman got up because of the noise about 11.50pm and saw police arrive about 20 minutes later. But it was after 2am before she could get back to sleep.
``We've been here 25 years and we're just about ready to get out.''
The woman said the family would like to get away from the area for New Year's Eve but were afraid to leave their premises unattended.
Vandals smashed a car's rear window, which was parked outside Harold Edmond's home on The Mall.
Mr Edmonds said it happened between 2am and 3am.
Nothing was taken from the car: ``It's straight out vandalism,'' he said.
A Rotorua family, the Corbetts, spend Christmas time each year at their holiday home but they are heading home today with their two young children, fed up with the noisy nights.
Only the previous night, a party along the road kept them awake until 4.30am.
``It's outrageously noisy and we're taking off,'' Jo Corbett said.
A temporary liquor ban is already in place in the Mt Maunganui area, but it was ignored by many of last night's revellers.
