Two athletes broke the previous record in the senior girls javelin competition, one of the first events at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Track & Field and Road Championships being held over three days in at the Hawkes Bay Regional Sports Park in Hastings.
First Caitlyn Bonne from St Margaret's
College surpassed the previous record of 44.44m with a fantastic throw of 47.97m and then Tanya Murray of Santa Maria College unleashed a huge effort of 48.95m in the fifth round to take the title. Jessica Senior finished third with 41.05.
Cam Robinson from Wellington College was in great form in the senior boy's javelin hitting a big personal best of 69.68m on his first attempt, well ahead of Anton Schroeder on 58.23m in second and Lochlainn Marryatt with 54.48m filling third place.
Andres Hernandez from St Bede's in Christchurch won the first track final of the championships, taking out the junior boys 3000 final in a time of 9:05.30 from William Taylor and Josh Hou.
In a surprise result in the senior girls 3000m, Liliana Braun (Cashmere High) was victorious in 10:01.49 from Aimee Ferguson with 10:03.15 and pre-race favourite Hannah O'Connor in 10:12.80.
Charli Miller and Jemima Antoniazzi provided a one-two finish for St Peter's School in Cambridge. Miller's time of 10:24.24, just ahead of Antoniazzi in 10:27.06 with Tillie Hollyer in third place.
Samuel Harris was winner of the senior boys pole vault for Shirley Boys, clearing 4.25m ahead of Matthew Aucamp (4.15) and Anthony Barmes (3.65) while Joshua Bull (Catholic Cathedral) won the junior boys vault with 3.00m.
Sam Colyer from Southland Boys won the junior boys long jump with 6.28m, ahead of Harley Patel-Muxlow on 6.06m and Max Teruaa 5.87m.
The junior boys hammer was a benefit for Whangarei Boys High School with Nik Kini throwing 56.05 and Jordyn Heteraka getting out to 54.21. Third place went to Joseph Quinn on 53.57.
Zion Trigger-Faitele (Scots College) was the winner of the junior boys shot put, tossing the 5kg implement 16.62m, ahead of hammer winner Kini (16.08) and Adam Stack on 13.46.
The championships continue on Saturday and Sunday.
