WINCANTON, England (AP) Irish jockey Timmy Murphy has been banned from racing for nine days for his involvement in a weighing-room scuffle in which he sustained a dislocated shoulder.
Murphy, who won the Grand National Steeplechase on Comply Or Die in 2008, admitted at an inquiry at Wincanton that he was the instigator of an altercation with fellow jockey Dominic Elsworth on Friday.
Paul Barton, a stipendiary steward who deals with disciplinary issues for the BHA, says Murphy's shoulder was injured when he was restrained by a valet, Chris Maude.
Barton says Murphy's punishment "could have been far higher but he is mitigated slightly as he did admit it, and apologized as soon as he could."
Murphy is suspended from racing between Dec. 19-22 and 26-30.
