Even after being globally discredited by a plucky British undercover journalist, it seems West African con-artists are still trying to relieve the gullible of their savings.
Faxes sent to New Zealand this week promise large dividends to New Zealanders willing to divulge bank details to people purporting to be looking for honest cash-stashers.
One, calling himself "Sir Tony Brown," has repeatedly faxed Ogden Aviation in Mangere, asking to use its "company and account either personal or company, to transfer some of these [company] funds scattered in some banks across the world."
"Sir Tony" requests, via fax, a name and banking information, despite having started his correspondence with "I have the honour most respectful to write you this personal letter."
Another correspondent, claiming to be the assistant director of finance for the Economic Community of West African States, writes that he received the name of Mr and Mrs Erskine-Legget of Greenlane from "the Chamber of Commerce."
Mr Erskine-Legget told the Business Herald he had received a few requests from Nigeria in the past but "never from ECOWAS" and it was "time to warn your readers - again!"
Cash just looking for a bank ...
