"They're doing alright and are staying with family. The kids went back to school, we thought it was good they're back into routine and to see their friends."
The family had been praised by the fire service for activating their escape plan, which the children learned through their school's Get Firewise programme.
"Michelle is grateful for all the training they go through at the school and the children remembered what to do. She told them to wake up and they remained calm. They had already discussed a meeting place for homework they had to do. Even the firemen were impressed with the kids," Rachel said.
They were also grateful to their neighbours who sheltered the children from seeing the fire engulf the house, she said.
Mr Bootten said the electric blanket that caused the Clayton Rd fire was old and if the blanket's wires were kinked they could cause a hotspot.
"In the Central Lakes [district] there's been three [fires caused by electric blankets] in two weeks, two here in Rotorua and one in Tokoroa," he said.

Electric blanket safety tips:
* Always ensure it's laid straight on the bed.
* Make sure it is not underneath heavy items such as underlays, woollen duvets.
* Only use it to warm the bed, don't have it on all night.
* Replace it at least every three years.
