The Rotorua Central Mall was evacuated after a light fitting overheated and triggered the fire alarm.
Local fire brigade officers were called to The Warehouse about 10.50am today. Rotorua senior station officer Colin Rolfe said two trucks attended and the entire centre had to be evacuated.
"It was one of the big flood light within the store, the fire was basically out on arrival it melted a plastic cover and had a bit of smoke," he said.
Officers were then called to a playground in Alison St, Mangakakahi about 11.15.
"Wood around the playground was smouldering, it was part of a platform and there wasn't much damage," he said.
