The bottle of whisky with a mysterious back story that attracted national attention is set to go under the hammer in Rotorua tonight.
The bottle, which was initially believed to have been from the cargo of the famous shipwrecked vessel SS Politician, is one of several items which will be auctioned off at the Canter for Cancer charity cocktail evening tonight, with all the money raised going to the Lakes branch of the Child Cancer Foundation.
The whisky had been tucked away in the back of a cupboard for decades and donated for the fundraiser.
Lakes branch president Win Macmillan said it hadn't been able to verify that the whisky came from the ship but either way the drop had an interesting back story and she hoped it would prove popular.
The Rotorua woman who donated the bottle said her husband had it stashed away for years. As the story goes, the bottle was part of the cargo on the SS Politician which sank off Eriskay, Scotland in 1941.
