Medical move
Rotorua Hospital's Older Persons and Rehabilitation Service has temporarily moved to the former Medical South Unit while the existing ground floor facility is redeveloped. It has also changed its name from the Rehabilitation Unit or Elderly Services. The redevelopment is part of the hospital's ongoing improvement project and includes an increase in beds from 16 to 21, ensuites in some rooms and special rooms with hoists. The work is expected to be finished by early November.
Big sports challenge
Thousands of high school students from all over New Zealand are in Rotorua for the annual Western Heights High School Invitation Tournament. About 60 schools with more than 250 teams are competing in the event, which starts tomorrow with an opening ceremony. It features rugby, netball, soccer, hockey, mountainbiking, motocross, theatre sports, debating, golf and smallbore rifle shooting at venues around the city. About 3500 participants and supporters are here for the event.
Talk on volcanoes
A talk that will explain how the GeoNet project collects data from the volcanoes in the Tongariro National Park, the Rotorua-Taupo area, Taranaki, Auckland, White Island and Raoul Island, will take place at the Rotorua Museum this weekend. Brad Scott will explain how the GeoNet project - New Zealand's national geological hazards monitoring programme - works on Sunday at 2pm. He will also talk about how people can keep an eye on their local geological scene. Entry to the talk costs $5 for Rotorua residents with proof of residency.
DJ P-Digsss in town
Rotorua residents will have a chance to catch DJ P-Digsss this weekend. Paora Apera, known as P-Digsss will be performing at Heaven and Hell nightclub tomorrow night. Residents might recognise him as the voice of New Zealand band Shapeshifter. P-Digsss DJs and sings in a mix of genres including hip-hop, dubstep, soul and tropical bass music.
