Despite the wet weather making its mark on Rotorua, it didn't stop people enjoying a long weekend in the city.
As predicted, rain marred most of the weekend with 49.2mm recorded over Saturday and Sunday.
Rotorua weatherman Brian Holden said the rain and clouds were brought on by a complex trough of low pressure over the country.
"It's going to be pretty much the same over the next few days with a few fine patches," he said.
Even though the rain hit, Rotorua businesses were enjoying the influx of customers over the three-day weekend.
Fat Dog Cafe and Bar operations manager Simon Wright said they had been dealing with queues of people waiting to be served at their Arawa St cafe.
"It's been awesome, we've been really busy and it's still going [yesterday]," Mr Wright said.
"We've had a lot of out-of-towners, a lot of people from Auckland, Wellington and Hamilton have come through."
The cafe has, for the past three years, not charged a surcharge fee during a public holiday.
"We've got a lot of regular and locals that come in and we can't not penalise them and charge out-of-towners the surcharge, it's not fair. We get a lot of people who are visiting who come in and the feedback from our Facebook page says each time they visit Rotorua they always come into Fat Dog."
Rotorua Motel Association president Glen Stafford said the majority of the 44 motels they represented were busy on Saturday night.
"It was full on Saturday night, across the board there were a lot of no vacancies signs around but Friday and Sunday was a different story."
Mr Stafford said the motel business was still experiencing the effects of the recession, with people having less money to spend to stay longer.
Meanwhile, Rotorua police say there weren't any major incidents reported over the weekend and believe the weather might have played a part in it.
"The weather was probably in our favour, there wasn't very much disorderly behaviour in the city, it was a pretty good weekend keeping people indoors," Senior Sergeant Malcolm Collins said.
"There were a few minor crashes between a couple vehicles but they were all minor. I think the rain kept speeds down as well."
The weather also forced Rotorua families to look at indoor activities to keep the children occupied.
Rotorua grandmother Bea Harris found plenty of activities to keep her eight grandchildren busy over the long weekend.
She and four of her grandchildren aged between two and 10, ended the Queen's Birthday holiday with a swim at the Rotorua Aquatic Centre yesterday.
"We've mainly been staying home, playing cards, doing jigsaws and letting them play outside when it's not raining," she said.
"The kids are pretty good at occupying themselves but I give them work to do around the house, like washing and cleaning to keep them out of trouble.
"We had a 2-year-old's birthday this weekend so that was fun for them but it does get a bit hectic when all the kids are inside because of the weather. That's why we've come to the aquatics - they say it's a good place to hang out."
Mother of two Liz Webby agreed as she and her partner took their two children, aged 11 months and 2 for a swim.
"It hasn't been fine enough to go to the park and walk around so we've taken them to the aquatics as the kids love it here," Ms Webby said.
"We haven't done anything special this weekend, we've gone out to lunch at a cafe but we've just been doing what we normally do."
