Three New Zealanders are going to Darfur in Western Sudan to help relief efforts for more than a million people affected by violent militias.
Auckland man Derrick Depledge, and Mark Mitchell and Kate Zwartz, both of Wellington, will join an international church team working with the United Nations in camps for displaced people.
Mr Depledge and Ms Zwartz will work as water and sanitation engineers, trying to prevent outbreaks of malaria, diarrhoea and cholera.
Mr Mitchell will work in logistics, responsible for ensuring food and building supplies are moved safety from warehouses to where they are needed and ensuring vehicles, radios and other equipment are kept in working order.
The three are representing Caritas New Zealand and Christian World Services.
A joint statement today said more than 1.2 million people had been forced from their homes in Darfur, after violence from Janjaweed militias.
