Several genetic engineering (GE) protesters were arrested at Parliament today after they refused to leave.
Protesters set up about 15 tents on Parliament grounds yesterday after earlier being asked to move from a roadside grass verge by Wellington City Council.
The group was ordered off Parliament grounds about 6pm yesterday.
A police spokeswoman confirmed that several people were arrested, but could not confirm numbers or provide further details.
Protest organiser Felicity Perry yesterday said the sleep-in was a last-resort protest against government plans to lift a moratorium on genetic engineering (GE) tomorrow, which would allow experiments outside the laboratory.
"This is just the beginning," she said.
"There are many people who are prepared to go as far as possible to keep New Zealand's GE standards."
