Heavy rain drenching Wellington today may have claimed its first life.
Police confirmed reports that one person was dead after a car crash they said may have been weather-related.
The fatality occurred as a car crashed on the Western Hutt Rd, State Highway 2, near the Horokiwi turnoff.
"We're still investigating and we have no firm details at this stage," a Wellington police spokesman told NZPA.
"From what we understand the accident may have been caused by the wet weather."
Heavy rain across the region flooded roads and closed buildings.
Lower Hutt's emergency management centre was partially activated after the city suffered a deluge overnight and again this morning.
