While the wet weather in the North Island kept most people indoors today, it didn't dampen the spirits of keen duck shooters out for the opening morning of the duck-shooting season.
The conditions were ideal, Hawke's Bay shooter Kerry Reid said. One of the better mornings he had seen for a few years.
"It's nice and drizzly, there's a bit of a breeze, so they (the ducks) hover," he said.
Up since 4.14am, ready to start at 6.15am, when shooting is allowed to begin, Mr Reid had already bagged a couple of ducks by 9am.
"Most of the duck-shooters would be happy with how the morning's gone," he said.
While he would take a break this afternoon he would be back in his maimai for more this evening. And it would be the same again tomorrow.
"It's an annual event that has to be done," he said.
