A driver is in a critical condition after ploughing into a parked police car during a chase in Waikato this morning.

Police say the man failed to stop just before 11am in Hamilton and officers chased the vehicle for 10 minutes before it crashed near Hamilton Airport.

Senior Sergeant Ray Malcomson said police were laying spikes across the road when the driver crashed into a parked patrol car.

The fleeing driver was critically injured and was being treated by paramedics at the scene.

The Serious Crash Unit has been advised and the Independent Police Conduct Authority would also be notified.
