Nine people have been hurt, one seriously, after a vehicle crashed into a truck in South Auckland.

Police were called to the crash on Tui St in Otahuhu about 5.10pm.

Otahuhu Engineering owner Tony Cranch said he drove past the crash on his way home from work.

"One car was badly damaged. It was knocked in at the front. It looked like it had maybe gone under the truck," he said.

Cranch described the vehicle as similar to a people mover and said the crash was blocking half of the road.

A police spokeswoman said she believed those injured were travelling in the same vehicle.

Ambulance staff were at the scene.
