State Highway 3 near Whanganui has reopened after a crash which injured six people this afternoon.
A rescue helicopter was called in to help transport casualties from the two-car crash which occurred shortly before 1.40pm between Mission Rd and Wicksteed Rd.
A police spokeswoman said the incident left six people injured, one critically and two seriously.
The state highway was closed by the crash, but police said in a statement this afternoon that it had since reopened.
One person who had serious injuries was trapped in a vehicle and had to be freed by emergency services.
Police, fire and ambulance staff all attended and the police serious crash unit is investigating to determine the cause of the crash.
"We understand there are two cars involved and there are a number of patients," the police spokeswoman said shortly after the incident. "Initial reports are that one person has critical injuries, two people have serious injuries and three people have moderate injuries."
