Two teenagers were driving a stolen car when they sped past police officers and lost control, crashing into another driver just seconds after a chase began.
The boys, 15 and 16, were travelling between 100 and 120km/h in the Mazda Demio heading south towards Cambridge on Cambridge Rd/ State Highway 1 near the Avantidrome about 4.05pm today, a police spokeswoman said.
A patrol car from Cambridge was searching for the stolen car at nearby St Peter's School when it spotted it speeding.
A member of the public had called *555 to report the Mazda Demio was driving dangerously at speeds in excess of 120km/h.
Officers started following the car and had just put on their lights and siren to pull the car over when it lost control just as it went around a bend.
The out-of-control car spun out missing the police car and ploughing into a 51-year-old driver whose car was behind the police car.
Police escorted the teenage boys who were taken by ambulance to Waikato Hospital with moderate injuries. The driver of the other vehicle was also transported to hospital with moderate injuries.
The fire service attended and removed one person from a vehicle.
The police serious crash unit was investigating.
The teenagers will face action under Youth Aid.
