A man is fighting for his life in Auckland Hospital after being attacked with piece of wood yesterday.

Police have released the names of the victims of two fatal accidents.

Nathan David Karatau died in a fatal crash on Rangitikei Line in Newbury on the outskirts of Palmerston North last Wednesday.

The 34-year-old Marton man died after two trucks crashed just hours after the official holiday road toll ended.

Police have also named the motorcyclist who died following a collision with a car on Cardrona Valley Rd on Friday.

He was Manfred Brand, 47, a Swiss national.

Brand was working in New Zealand at the time of his death.

The Serious Crash Unit is still investigating the crash.

The 2017 road toll already stands at nine.
