Detectives in Hamilton are investigating a "suspicious" car fire that happened early this morning.

The car, parked inside a carport at a Tauwhare Road address, was seriously damaged by the flames.

Emergency services were called to the fire at 3am, to find the car and carport, "well ablaze".

Detective Sergeant Terri Wilson, of the Hamilton CIB, said the prompt call from neighbours meant it was extinguished before the flames could spread further.

"Prompt calls from the neighbours to the 111 service allowed fire-fighters to contain the blaze to the vehicle and carport, keeping the damage to a minimum."

Police were continuing scene examinations of the property today.

Anyone with any information is being asked to contact Detective Steve Stokes at the Hamilton Central Police Station on 07 858 6200.

Alternatively information can be left anonymously with Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
