Victoria University's student army, armed with shovels, will swoop into Porirua today to help with the big clean-up.

The Student Volunteer Army effort comes as quake- and flood-stricken Wellington moves into recovery mode.

The students will clean from 10.30am to 3pm and are coordinating with the Porirua Emergency Management Office to identify areas that need their help.
