Police are investigating a poaching incident after two cattle were shot on a Southland farm.

One of the animals was gutted and the carcass taken, while the other was left there dead.

Police were notified on Friday of the incident on a property about 15km from Tuatapere, a police spokeswoman said.

The property was at Merrivale, near the intersection of Devery Rd and Otautau-Tuatapere Rd, the spokeswoman said.

No further details were provided.

However, a graphic post is being shared on social media which shows the entrails of one animal and the bloodied and dead carcass of the other.

The post offers $1000 to anyone who can provide information.
