A judge has ruled New Zealand Police canines are among the top dogs in Australasia.

The country's police dog teams have won four top prizes after six days of intense competition in Melbourne.

In the individual patrol dog category, Senior Constables Dave Robison and his dog Isaac, from Whakatane, took out first prize.

The Whakatane pair also took out the top tracking award, while the Auckland duo won the top searching award.

The combined results meant the team came home with the Australasian police trials trophy for another year.

While the officers are due to head home today, their canine buddies are to follow in a few days after standard vet checks have given them the all clear to travel.
