A 29-year-old overseas visitor has died in a crash in South Wairarapa this morning, police say.

Police Sergeant Ian Osland said a member of the public found a white Toyota Estima upside down in a culvert this morning on Shooting Butts Rd in Martinborough. The man was inside the vehicle.

"Once we have contacted next of kin we may be able to work out when this may have occured."

Police would like to hear from anyone who was travelling in the area overnight.

Emergency services were called to the crash about 7am this morning.

Road closures are in place at the intersection of White Rock Rd and Shooting Butts Rd, and also at the intersection of Shooting Butts Rd and Todds Rd.

The serious crash unit is investigating.
