A motorcyclist killed in a crash at the intersection of Rehi Road and Whirinaki Valley Road, Ngakuru, south of Rotorua yesterday has been named by police.

He was 42-year-old James Simerka of Ngakuru.

The Serious Crash Unit were continuing to investigate the crash, which occurred at about 5.15pm yesteRday.

A Rotorua Daily Post reporter at the scene soon after the crash said a ute was on the side of the road, which appeared to have damage to its front left corner.

In a statement released this afternoon, police offered their sympathies to the friends and family of the victim "at this tragic time".
