Police were called after a group of men were seen running naked through the small town of Shannon this afternoon.

Authorities were sent out about 1pm following a report of streakers sprinting down Plimmer Terrace in the Horowhenua district.

It is understood there were up to 10 men involved.

A police spokeswoman said they received a report from a member of the public at 12.50am.

A number of shops on the main road said they had heard about the story, but had not seen the group themselves.

A woman at a local hotel laughed when asked about the incident and said she had been told the men were "most definitely not locals.''

"They were just passing through town, from what I can gather - because no one knew them,'' she said.
