A stolen car ploughed into a stationary police vehicle in the Waikato this afternoon as the officer laid road spikes to stop the driver.

The driver of the stolen Subaru Legacy allegedly fled police in East Tamaki and drove south on State Highway 1 before crashing near Whangamarino Rd, North Waikato about 1.05pm.

Nobody was injured in the crash, and a male youth has been arrested and will be charged, police said.

Traffic is down to one lane and a diversion is in place at Island Block Rd.

The road will remain at one lane for most of the afternoon while police and the Serious Crash Unit investigate.
