Kiwi sports fans can send messages of support to the New Zealand Olympic team taking part in Rio 2016 straight from their phone.

The New Zealand Olympic Committee and ANZ have worked together to create the Official New Zealand Olympic Team mobile app.

Users can write a personal message for their favourite athletes. The Kiwi team will be able to access them by pointing their devices towards the sky. The messages will show up in a virtual field of stars.

The app was launched last night with a ray of light capable of reaching more than 900 metres into the sky beamed from the top of the ANZ tower in central Auckland.

It will allow users to keep tabs on the schedules for all Kiwi athletes, relive winning moments in video, watch exclusive interviews, get instant access to results and much more.

The beam was generated by 12 individual lights creating 96,000 watts of zenon light. Originally brought to New Zealand for the 2011 Rugby World Cup, it's so powerful organisers needed clearance from the Civil Aviation Authority to operate it.

The light will shine again tonight and tomorrow night.

The app is downloadable from the usual app stores.
