A large gang fight in Ashburton involving weapons has resulted in police making nine arrests.

The skirmish happened in the town's Mona Square on Saturday.

Police alleged that a group of people with weapons attacked two others from a rival group.

Nine people were arrested in the Netherby area of Ashburton this morning.

Eight people will appear at Christchurch District Court tomorrow.

One person has been bailed and will appear at Ashburton District Court at a later date.

"Saturday's incident is the third in recent times involving serious disorder from these two groups," a police statement said.

"Police will not tolerate this type of behaviour in our communities and today's arrests show that those involved in such incidents will be held accountable for their actions."

Police say no further comment can be made while the matter is before the courts.
