A Christchurch motorcycle gang headquarters has been shut down by police.

The Rebels headquarters, on Vauges Rd in Northcote, was the subject of a number of search warrants over the last few months, police said.

During the searches, police seized firearms and drugs.

Police said the community had provided them with a "large volume" of information which had helped shut the headquarters down.

They were grateful to those who "stood up against this behaviour".

Canterbury offenders taskforce sergeant Richard Wilson said, "Quite rightly, the public do not want these criminal gangs set up in their neighbourhoods, around their schools, their businesses or their shopping malls.

"The ultimate goal here is to have these people becoming productive members of society, something we will not give up on," he said.

Anyone suffering from drug addiction was encouraged to contact the drug and alcohol helpline on 0800 787 797.

Those with information that could help police in fighting drug and gang crime could contact their local station or report information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
