A head-on crash on the Kapiti Coast has led to a plea for drivers to slow down and drive to the conditions.

At least two vehicles collided at Paekakariki after a vehicle crossed the centreline near the intersection of State Highway 1 and Beach Rd about 8.30am.

Police said the southbound car crossed the centre line and collided head-on with the northbound vehicle.

The southbound car then bounced off another northbound vehicle.

One person was taken to hospital with serious leg injuries. The others involved in the crash were checked by ambulance officers and appeared to have suffered minor injuries.

The diversions which were in place for more than two hours were expected to be moved about 11am.

Police are urging drivers to slow down as they approach the scene and drive to the conditions.
