A tow truck with a van on its trailer have been destroyed in a suspicious blaze at an Auckland automotive yard.

Northern Fire Shift manager Megan Ruru said a truck and van parked in a Mt Eden automotive business were burning fiercely when the alarm was raised at 2.20am.

The burning vehicles were parked next to a building and firefighters held concerns flames would spread causing further damage.

"It seems as though the building has been saved," she said.

The fire was considered suspicious.

Police and fire safety officers would be returning to the scene to investigate.
