A Wellington woman charged with murder will stay in custody for a mental health assessment.

The 37-year-old is accused of murdering another 37-year-old woman in the Wellington suburb of Strathmore earlier this month.

Both women have name suppression for now.

The murder-accused did not appear in the High Court at Wellington this morning for a brief hearing, the contents of which were suppressed by Justice Simon France.

The judge allowed media to report that the "matter has been remanded for mental health assessment".

The woman will stay in custody until another hearing early in June.

Shortly after the killing, police said the murder-accused's child was being looked after by family.
