Bay of Plenty district command centre Senior Sergeant Steve Shaw said the investigation into the incident was still ongoing and police would not be able to provide any further information today.
He said police did not want to give any details today surrounding the woman's identity out of respect to her family.
A spokesman from Intercity, the company of the bus, said they could not comment today as there was no manager available.
A female pedestrian died after being struck by a bus in Rotorua last night.
The woman was struck by the bus on the corner of Te Ngae Road and Coulter Road at 7.40pm.
Diversions are in place at:
• SH30 & Pohutukawa Dr
• SH30 & Sunrise Ave
St John attended the incident and treated one person. It did not transfer anyone to hospital.
Fire Service were called to the crash but did not assist, a northern Fire Service spokesman said.
The police Serious Crash Unit is at the scene.
Sanjita Mainali, an attendant at Great Spice Indian Takeaway on Te Ngae Rd, said the woman who was hit bought a rice and curry off her shortly before the crash.
Ms Mainali realised it was the woman when she saw her black backpack lying on the side of the road.
The woman, who was aged about 40, was alone. She had traveled from somewhere and was planning to stay in Rotorua for the night before travelling again, Ms Mainali said.
The woman had taken a takeaway menu with her so she could order takeaways again for lunch tomorrow, Ms Mainali said.
There are no other details about the incident available this morning.
