A woman was seriously injured when the car she was driving left the road and rolled.

The 48-year-old sustained serious facial and head injuries in the crash at Porangahau about 1.30 this morning.

The car appeared to have left the road and rolled over, causing substantial damage to the vehicle, a Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter spokeswoman said.

St John Intensive Care Paramedics attended to her before the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter airlifted her to Hawke's Bay Hospital for further treatment.
