Two people were trapped in a car that drove several metres down a bank in North of Wellington.

Emergency services were called to Paekakariki Hill Rd at 6.36pm today where a car had dropped five to 10 metres down a bank, central police communications spokesman Guy Callahan said.

Two people were trapped in the car but the driver was now freed, he said.

The woman passenger was extricated from the car at about 8.26pm today, a central fire spokesman said.

A Wellington Hospital spokeswoman said one person was currently being assessed in hospital.

A block of land with two holiday homes near Thames, in an area where a handful of pioneer families first settled over a hundred years ago, is up for sale.

The road was "relatively windy", Mr Callahan said.

Police, ambulance and fire were still at the scene.
