A man on the run from police since last year has been caught in Waikato with firearms and a stash of illegal drugs.

The 24-year-old man was arrested in Kihikihi, near Te Awamutu, overnight.

He was held in custody due to appear in Hamilton District Court today.

A post on the Te Awamutu Police Facebook page said two firearms, ammunition, cannabis and methamphetamine were seized from an address in Kihikihi.

"Sometimes you finish a shift and you feel like you have contributed to making the town a little safer. Tonight's one of those days," the post said.

The post was accompanied by photos of the seized items.

"In my mind it shows what people who are on the run get up to along the way to finally getting caught by us," the post said.

"I believe he is a good person at heart with a good family around him. I hope together they can pull him through the bad times and that from here on out things will improve.

"Guns and drugs never mix. Wanted people will always be caught. It's only a matter of time."
