Most of the country will enjoy fine weather with a chance of showers for the rest of the Easter holiday weekend.

The MetService said temperatures will feel more autumnal this weekend.

"We've got a slim ridge of high pressure over the country," said MetService meteorologist Ciaran Doolin.

"However there is a body of moisture over the North Island that's going to bring showers to central and eastern areas today.

"Possibility of afternoon thunderstorms in western central areas, Taranaki and Taihape.

"The South Island will have a few showers, across the northwest Westland, which should fine up into the afternoon," Mr Doolin said.

"It's a fairly similar story for both islands tomorrow.

"A front is making progress into the South Island tomorrow afternoon, reaching Dunedin and the Canterbury plains.

"The North Island will experience a few showers in the central areas. Otherwise a fine day for most people.

"On Monday the front affecting the South will progress further up the South Island, pushing its way to the North Island and bringing showers to the western area of the island.

"For the most part it will be a nice weekend for everyone."

Some areas may experience showers but they are not expected to last.
