Police in Palmerston North are appealing to anyone who may have seen an attack -- in which a young man suffered serious head injuries -- to come forward.

The 23-year-old, who is recovering at Wellington Hospital, was assaulted on Main St near The Office bar in the early hours of Sunday.

Police were called to the scene at around 3am.

Detective Dave Wilson told the Herald officers were working to piece together the circumstances of the attack. They believe there may have been more than one attacker.

Mr Wilson said the victim was doing okay and had been able to speak to his parents.

Officers are due to speak to him later tonight.

Anyone with information is urged to contact Mr Wilson on 021 191 4642, or CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
