A man has been airlifted to hospital with critical injuries after a quad bike accident north of Auckland.

The 55-year-old man was airlifted from West Coast Rd, Kaipara Flats about 1.30pm.

A police spokesman said the man was trapped underneath a quad bike.

A St John spokesman said he was transported to Auckland City Hospital in a critical condition.
