Eight Kiwis in Tunisia during attack

Eight New Zealanders were registered as being in Tunisia when 39 tourists were killed in a terrorist attack at a beach resort, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade says.

The travel advisory for Tunisia has been updated by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Mfat), but there has no been change to the risk level after the June 26 Isis-linked attack.

The New Zealand Embassy in Cairo was in contact with local authorities in Tunisia and there were no indications that any New Zealanders were caught up in the terrorist attack, an Mfat spokesperson said.

Mfat advises there is a significant threat from terrorism in Tunisia, with a recent increase in terrorist activity, and caution is advised for tourists because of the threat from terrorism and kidnapping.

Armed with a rifle and grenades, a gunman killed at least 39 people, including 15 British tourists, at a popular beach resort in Port El Kanataoui.

Another 39 were injured in the attack.

A terrorist attack on March 18 saw 21 tourists killed at the Bardo Museum in the centre of Tunis.

Further attacks could not be ruled out, particularly in large cities and popular tourist destinations, Mfat warned on its website.
