A large fire has destroyed a farm house on Great Barrier Island.
The blaze was spotted by four off-duty Fire Service staff staying at a hotel on the island around 9.20pm last night.
They saw flames coming from the house on Shoal Bay Rd, south of Tryphena, and rushed to the scene to help the residents.
They were joined by rural fire brigade and water trucks.
All residents of the property were accounted for, and there were no reports of injuries, northern fire communications shift commander Megan Ruru said.
Firefighters had to take defensive measures, she said as there were a number of LPG tanks and a fuel storage tank holding about 400 litres of fuel, as well as farm machinery in the area.
The blaze was extinguished at around 11.30pm, but the house was destroyed.
Fire investigators would inspect the scene today.
