A baby being dangled outside a car window has distressed Hamilton police.

An off-duty police officer called 111 yesterday evening after seeing the baby shoved partially outside the window of a car in the suburb of Nawton.

The car, with four people inside, was travelling along Avalon Drive.

Waikato police spokesman Andrew McAlley says the officer tried to keep an eye on the car, but lost sight of it.

"One of the passengers in the car has seen him, taken an interest and has given him the fingers before he's lost sight of the car in the traffic at the main intersection."

Police are on the look out for the passengers and the car in question.
