An advertisement offering a car 'wrapping' service is a "tried and true" scam, police are warning.
The scam offers payment for motorists willing to have their car wrapped in sign writing.
Motorists who respond to the advert are sent a cheque to lodge in their bank account, with instructions to then immediately transfer the money to an off-shore account which pays to have their car 'wrapped' in sign-writing.
But the cheque bounces, leaving the victim out of pocket, and in most cases in debt to their bank for the off-shore money transfer.
"We are appealing for anyone who has been a victim of this scam, and has not been spoken to by police, to contact us as soon as possible," said Detective Matthew Kay of the Counties Manukau financial investigation team.
"We also implore anyone who may have seen the ad and is thinking about contacting them to please avoid doing so.
"This is a tried and true scam, please don't let yourself become the next victim."
Anyone with information relating to the scam, is asked to call Mr Kay on 09 262 9110 or anonymously contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
