An elderly man has died after falling down a lift shaft at a home in East Auckland.

Emergency services were called to the home on Stevenson Way, Cockle Bay just before midday.

Police northern communications spokesman Inspector Ian Booker said St Johns paramedics called police from the scene where they reported an 87-year-old had died.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said the couple who lived at the home were friendly but kept to themselves.

Police, ambulance and the fire service are still on the scene.
