A 4-year-old boy is in hospital with serious injuries after being involved in a quad bike accident this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to a private property in the small town of Eketahuna, just south of Palmerston North, at around 4pm.

St John medical staff worked on the boy before he was flown to Palmerston North Hospital by the Lowe Corporation Rescue Helicopter for further treatment.

A police spokesman said it is understood the boy was one of two children who had been riding quad bikes at the property, before they collided.

Only the 4-year-old child required treatment.
