Travellers hoping to take a ferry between the North and South Island over the next couple of days could be disappointed, as many crossings have been delayed or cancelled because of the storm hitting the country.

Interislander passengers have been advised to monitor the company's website to check on their sailings.

The company has said delays might continue tomorrow, depending on the weather, but services were expected to return to normal by Saturday.

Ferry information:

* Stena Alegra:

Sea conditions have now restricted the Stena Alegra ferry from carrying passengers.

Passengers booked on today's Stena Alegra 5pm sailing from Wellington will now be re-booked on tomorrow morning's 7am Arahura sailing.

Stena Alegra with sail with freight only tonight about 6pm.

* Arahura:

Due to severe weather and delays, tonight's 11pm freight sailing of the Arahura from Wellington and its return are cancelled.

* Kaitaki:

Kaitaki is currently 2.5 hours late and is expected in Wellington about 8pm.

Kaitaki will then reload with passengers in Wellington and is expected to depart about 10.30pm.
