Police are seeking witnesses to a daylight sexual assault on a woman in Lower Hutt yesterday.

The woman was walking through Delaney Park in Stokes Valley about 7pm when she noticed a man near the cricket club, Detective Sergeant Mike Priston said.

The man followed her from Delaney Park through the alleyway to Chittick Street, where he sexually assaulted her.

It was believed the man ran back towards Delaney Park.

As a result of the incident the woman was distressed and shaken, Mr Priston said.

The offender was described as about 175cm tall, a muscular build and aged in his late teens or early 20s.

"We are appealing for anyone who has information in respect to the sexual assault to contact the Wellington Crime Squad.

"If anyone has any information in regard the incident I would encourage them to come forward," Mr Priston said.

People with information can call the Wellington Crime Squad on (04) 381 2000 or anonymously by contacting Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
